CASE: TWIN HVAC-SYSTEM WITH HIGH EMC REQUIREMENTS AND DEMANDING HEATING AND COOLING PERFORMANCE

Cabin volume: ~7 m3

Occupants: 5 persons plus driver

Ambient temperature: -21 to +49°C

Operation according to: Def-Stan 23-006 (Sect 2) & 01-5 (MODUC)

Power supply: 24 V

Requirements: Heating up to 32°C within 15 minutes & cooling down to 20°C within 20 minutes; TM/SP21 compressor

Unit: Armored defense vehicle (MRAP) with three different configurations (including light weapon systems)

Challenge: High EMC requirements and demanding heating and cooling performance, combined with very limited installation space and complex air distribution. Additional requirements for the pick-up version include fast removal of the module, including the rear evaporator.

Solution approach:

  • Adaptation of the refrigerant circuit with special installations, including shut-off valves for rapid removal of the rear evaporator using quick connectors and bypass systems
  • Use of modified HVAC systems to meet high EMC requirements
  • Condenser (without fan) and receiver-drier
  • Integration of a standard defense heater for preheating the engine and cabin

FALKON HVAC DEFENSE – EVAPORATOR

Special EMC version based on customer requirements, featuring modifications to the blower and housing (faraday cage design).

Challenge: Very limited installation space and customer-specific HVAC requirements. Extremely flat evaporator design. Customized air outlets. Adapted connectors and offset condensate drains. Use of special components.

Solution approach:

  • Design of the complete refrigerant circuit including all components (two evaporators, compressor, condenser and receiver-drier, manual temperature controls, lines and sensors)
  • Rear evaporator with customized air outlet design to meet very tight installation constraints
  • Partial adaptation of standard products to specific requirements (e.g. modified thermostats)
